Pollinators include bees, butterflies, bats, moths, wasps, flies, beetles, ants and hummingbirds. They are an integral part of the environment and important for crop production. Many of these species have suffered downward trends in their populations and agricultural landscapes often lack sufficient habitat to support native pollinators. The NWTF Pollinator Mix was developed with the assistance of the NRCS and Xerces Society and meets the South Carolina Technical Guide specifications for pollinator habitat using native wildflowers and grasses.
Pollinator habitat is maximized on sites greater than one-half acre and NRCS recommends creating a habitat patch of 1-2 acres for every 25 acres of cropland. Pollinator plantings also serve as excellent nesting and brooding areas for turkeys and other ground nesting birds. Besides pollinators, this mix also supports other beneficial insects that help control insect pests in croplands.
